The Influence of Artificial Intelligence on the Teaching and Learning Process

Perceptions of Faculty Members at a Higher Education Institution in Angola

Abstract

This study investigated how Artificial Intelligence (AI) influences pedagogical practices, autonomous learning, the development of critical and creative thinking, as well as the ethical challenges and implications associated with its use. A qualitative approach was adopted, grounded in the constructivist-interpretative paradigm and employing a phenomenological method, involving 15 faculty members from a Higher Education Institution in Angola. Data were collected through an online questionnaire with open-ended questions and analysed using Thematic Analysis procedures. The results indicate that educators perceive AI as a tool for pedagogical support and personalized learning, enhancing efficiency and autonomy, while emphasising the need for teacher mediation and critical use. Key potentialities include immediate feedback and information organization, whereas primary challenges involve digital literacy, pedagogical and ethical training, the prevention of cognitive dependency and plagiarism.
