The Portuguese swine breed Malhado de Alcobaça is original from the western region of Portugal, with a restricted adult breeding population of 150 females and 12 boars (in 10 breeders). Population was recognized in 2003, with implementation of the Zootechnical Register. The Genealogical Herdbook (LGMA), was created in March 2014, being actually managed by FPAS. By complying with the LGMA regulation, the morphological classification of all breeders was started. All the animals are graded for inscription in the breeder’s section of Herdbook, identified with an ear tag, with collection of biological material for analysis and parentage testing by LGM-INIAV. The LGMA has molecular information of all the existing breeding stock, making the pedigrees credible, with genetic characterization of the population. From the year 2014 to the present, 296 animals (270 F and 26 M) were classified for LGMA, with a mean age of 22.03±21.01 months. These animals were born between the years 2003-2017, with a predominance of 2014 (62.3% of the data). The origin of the animals was only from six different breeders, with a strong incidence in Selecpor, (~ 60% of individuals). The grading of morphological characteristics of the animals consists of 5 partial marks weighted in the total with different coefficients according to sex (F, M): 1) Type and development (coefficient 2M = 8.72±0.74; 1.5F = 8.53±0.71); 2) Back, loin and rump (coef 2.5M = 8.76±0.60; 2F = 8.53±0.71); 3) Blades, chest, belly and flanks (coef 2M = 8.44±0.56; 3F = 8.26±0.65); 4) Limbs, leg stances and movement (coef. 2.5M = 7.92±0.95; 2.5F = 8.01±0.86); and 5) Sexual characteristics, genitalia and nipples (coef 1M = 8.44±0.71; 1F = 8.29±0.70). By the weighted sum of the 5 partial marks we obtain the total score (PT) for each breeder that had a mean of 83.79±5.78 for M and 82.36±4.65 for F.
