Abstract

When hygiene habits are worked out in childhood, it will be easier for children to incorporate healthy habits into their life. Thus, the present study, of a mixed nature, intended to: a) know the hygiene of students in a class of 6th grade (2nd CEB) and b) understand whether there is any relationship between students' knowledge in relation to hygiene and hygiene practices. The questionnaire survey used was applied to a group of the 6th grade of the 2nd CEB of a public school of the council of Ourém. The students answered individually, without any previous information about the problem under study - hygiene. The students participating in this study presented some knowledge about hygiene habits recognizing their importance for a healthier life. However, it appears that some behaviors do not fit with proper hygiene habits. Notwithstanding this situation, in most cases, students' practices are related to their knowledge of the subject. It is concluded that the school has a central role in training children with adequate knowledge and in promoting practices that are consistent with adequate child hygiene.
