The purpose of this article is to identify dimensions, criteria and principles of social responsibility in the school context. The methodology used is qualitative. A narrative review of literature was carried out, a documentary analysis of 93 educational projects of teaching schools and four focus groups with school directors and teachers. From a review of the literature, we perceive that social responsibility is not superior and a recurring practice, but is still incipient in the establishment of basic and secondary education. In this sense, we try to identify higher education social responsibility practices adapted to non-superior education. When analyzing two educational projects, we verified that only 16 schools refer to expressing social responsibility. The study participants identified as essential areas of school responsibility, civic education and values, and environmental responsibility. We propose four dimensions of school social responsibility, namely: 1) leadership and organizational management, 2) environmental dimension, 3) social dimension, and 4) educational processes. We define 24 criteria of social responsibility of schools. We present three principles of social responsibility in the school context, namely: 1) personal responsibility, 2) leadership responsibility and 3) global responsibility.
