This article reveals part of a qualitative intervention's research conducted in reflective sessions of semiotic representations, with elementary school students from a public school in the city of São Luís - Maranhão / Brazil. With the purpose of contributing to the improvement of the school's performance in mathematics. To achieve this, in the elaboration of the mathematics activities applied to the research’s subject, records of semiotic representation were used, to work on the treatment functions and the cognitive functions of converting one record into another. The reviews were based in the Records of Semiotic Representation Theory. The students show a better comprehension in activities involving records treatment than when converting one record into another record. It was observed that in the convertion of natural language record to the numeric record, they revealed a better performance than working with other types of conversion. It was also noted that the difficulties of learning were not only related to the resolution of the proposed activities, but to the lecture and interpretation of what they were reading. This fact led us to conjecture that, to improve the learning of the subjects of this research it was necessary to use others methodological practices. The education based in mathematics representations. Seeing as it is believed that teaching based on this theory can facilitate the learning, and consequently the students will have better use in Mathematics.
