Abstract
With this article we aim to address the issue of doctoral education as a tool to develop, in PhD students/early stage researchers, not only a solid research background, but also a set of skills to respond creatively to societal complex and unknown situations, regardless of the sector in which they will find employment (inside or outside Academia). The experience of the NOVA Doctoral School will be described, assuming that the main result of a doctoral process is the personal and professional development of the PhD student and not exclusively his/her thesis.
We will focus on the “Finishing my PhD: the next 90 days” course as it is attended by NOVA PhD students at the end of their doctoral process and which aims, besides a reflection on their post-doctoral stage, to divulge a range of different professional careers and to offer contact with professionals with very diverse career paths, either in the academic world, or outside the walls of Academia.
