Abstract

UBBU is a platform that aims to teach programming and develop computational thinking in children aged six to 12. This study involved the use of this platform, with the main goal of analyzing its impact on the development of mathematical problem-solving and computational thinking skills in 6th year’s students. The methodology followed a qualitative approach framed in a case study. Data collection was achieved through participant observation and document analysis. To evaluate the impact of the UBBU platform on the development of these mathematical skills, 27 students from a 6th year class participated. These students were asked three problems, at three different times, in order to analyze their performance and verify whether using the platform over time could contribute to develop problem-solving skills. Three students were also selected for a more in-depth analysis of their productions while using the UBBU platform, with the purpose of investigating the development of computational thinking skills. From the analysis of the results, it was found that the students in the class, in general, demonstrated an improvement in their problem-solving ability and demonstrated the application of computational thinking practices. It was also verified, for the three selected students, that there was a correlation between the ability to solve problems and the ability to solve the exercises on the platform. Thus, UBBU encouraged the development of these mathematical skills in a constructive way, allowing students to reformulate their productions and overcome difficulties in understanding problems. It is suggested that UBBU has pedagogical potential to increase interest, commitment, motivation, and quality of learning, especially in Mathematics.
