Focusing on the presence/absence of men as teachers in early childhood education, this paper problematizes gender as a marker of the teaching condition. Based on studies on gender, teaching and early childhood education, it assumes the premise that, in spite of being a gendered space, preschool constitutes a democratic space, where children need to experience gender equality in school relations. Produced at the postdoctoral level, as an exploratory approach to the teaching condition in early childhood education in Brazil, semi-structured interviews were conducted with male teachers working in preschool. The analysis suggests that the presence of male teachers in early childhood education problematizes the established gender relations, which still demarcate education is childcare as a female task, since male teachers point to their importance in promoting more egalitarian gender relations.
