Introduction: Hypertension is a serious public health problem worldwide. The intervention of health professionals aims at the prevention and control of the disease, as well as the training of people in adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Objetive: To know the evidence in the literature about the lifestyle of people with arterial hypertension.
Methods: Integrative literature review, carried out on the databases: Complementary Index, Academic Search Complete and ScienceDirect, from 1 January 2017 to 11 May 2019. A free secondary search was also carried out.
Results: Of the 592 articles resulting from both searches, they were included in this review 16 studies. The results indicate that the lifestyle influences the health of the person with hypertension. Most articles focused on the items that make up the lifestyle and others are related to the influence of health education and the support of family members.
Conclusions: In most articles it is recommended to change the lifestyle (healthy eating, regular physical activity, decreased alcohol consumption and smoking cessation), to promote health and prevent complications of hypertension. The facilitating elements of this modification include the education of clients by health professionals and the support of family members. International and national plans / programs are relevant scientific documents proposing the implementation of effective strategies on this theme.
