Introduction: The experience of childbirth and the birth of a child are unique moments in the life of a woman and her family. A positive childbirth experience promotes the health of women and families throughout the perinatal period and is easier to achieve if the influencing factors are identified.
Objective: To map the factors that positively influence women's childbirth experiences.
Methods: Scoping review conducted according to the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute, research conducted in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, MedicLatina, and Cochrane Clinical Answers databases in November 2023. The selection of studies was based on PRISMA. This process was carried out independently by two reviewers.
Results: Thirteen articles published between 2020 and 2023 were included in the study. Factors intrinsic and extrinsic to women were identified. A relationship of trust established with the healthcare team was of great importance in women's positive experiences.
Conclusion: Intrinsic factors (sociodemographic factors, preferences regarding childbirth, perceptions of care quality, preparation for childbirth) and extrinsic factors (organisation of care by health professionals) positively influence women's childbirth experience. This study may contribute to the reflection and implementation of new practices in the provision of maternal and obstetric nursing care, based on scientific evidence, centred on each woman, her wishes and needs, and promoting a positive experience.
