Meanings attributed to family nurses for the functionality of families with dependent elderly people

Introduction: The implementation of the professional profile of the family nurse in Primary Health Care and the mission of the family being considered a care unit requires in-depth knowledge of its structure, development and functionality. However, studies on the recognition of the social mandate of this profession tend to consider the family as the context of care.
Objective: Analyze the meanings that families with dependent elderly people attribute to the family nurse for family functionality.
Methods: Qualitative study with a phenomenological orientation with families of dependent elderly people enrolled in a USF. 12 subjects participated, who met the inclusion criteria. The data collection instrument was the semi-structured interview.
Results: From the analysis of the narratives, 5 central themes emerged: Technical support, Emotional support, Scientific support, Political strategy, and Individual focus/Family focus. For the participants, the family nurse does not have the same meaning. Some narratives reveal deeper knowledge of the professional profile as a political strategy and transformative action from an individual focus to a family focus; in others, only the meaning attributed to technical support emerges.
Conclusion: Families do not recognize the family nurse as a promoter of family functionality, which is why a change in practices that is congruent with a professional profile clearly focused on the family as a client and not just as a context of care is essential.
