breastfeeding; prolonged breastfeedingAbstract
Introduction: The WHO (2018) recommends that breastfeeding be exclusive for the first 6 months of life, and complementary to dietary diversification until the age of 2 or more. It is considered prolonged if maintained after this age. Furthermore, the benefits of breastfeeding are widely recognized, being more significant the longer the duration of breastfeeding.
Objective: to identify factors influencing the maintenance of breastfeeding for 2 or more years.
Methods: descriptive-exploratory study. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire, developed by the researchers, applied online between April 1 and May 31, 2022. All ethical and formal procedures were guaranteed.
Results: The sample consisted of 294 women who breastfed for more than 2 years, mostly between 30–39 years of age (77.2%), married (53.7%) and with higher education (51.4%). The factors that contributed to women breastfeeding for 2 or more years were: knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding, maternal motivation and support form a partner. On the other hand, the suspension was justified by: tiredness; maternal desire; baby’s age or refusal; and new pregnancy.
Conclusion: Factors that influence breastfeeding for 2 or more years were identified, allowing us to guide a specialized practice that promotes breastfeeding, as recommended by the World Health Organization
