Abstract

Introduction: Some evidence includes the excessive or incorrect use of antibiotics, insufficient disinfection of surfaces and medical equipment, and failures in the triage and isolation of patients. According to the global report on the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, the World Health Organisation (2015) states that this is a public health problem and that if left unchecked by 2050, more than 10 million people could die every year. Therefore, ineffective disinfection of surfaces in the hospitalized person's environment poses a direct risk of contracting infections. Therefore, Infection prevention is a key factor that all healthcare professionals must focus on to improve the quality of care provided.

Objective: To map scientific evidence of the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide in decontaminating hospital surfaces to prevent infections.

Method: The review followed the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines in the PubMed, B-On, CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE Complete, and Web of Science databases. Grey literature and unpublished studies were also included through RCAAP. Articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, published from 01/12/2021 to 31/12/2023, were included. Identification, analysis, and ranking of studies carried out by two independent reviewers.

Results: Twenty-one articles met the review's eligibility criteria. Of these twenty-one articles, there were five analytical observational cohort studies, one descriptive observational, correlational study, five quasi-experimental studies, two case-control studies, one qualitative study, three randomized studies, and four systematic reviews.

Conclusion: Hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant on hospital surfaces is effective against multiple microorganisms, thus corroborating the reduction of hospital-acquired infections. The results of this research in these different contexts could improve clinical practice when using hydrogen peroxide to disinfect surfaces, and this information could be introduced into the training programs of students in the areas of health, microbiology, and biochemistry, among others, and further research using other contexts, with other dosages, other combinations of substances and other time periods.
