Abstract

Introduction: Oral intake in labor is practiced inappropriately in many Portuguese hospitals and maternity wards, with reports that fasting is a common practice and is routinely perpetuated in all parturients.

Objective: To identify the best scientific evidence on the most appropriate diet for full-term parturients without associated pathologies.

Methods: A Systematic Literature Review (RSL) was carried out according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) method and was written in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA 2020).

Results: The search was carried out in 5 databases, CINAHL Complete, B-On, PUBMED, MEDLINE Complete and Nursing & Allied Health Colection, on March 30, 2023. Descriptors (MeSH) and terms in natural language were used, with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. The limiting factors used were all studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with a time frame of 5 years. Sixty-seven articles were assessed and analyzed for eligibility by two independent reviewers and 11 articles were included in the review.

Conclusion: The studies point to clear liquids without residues, rich in carbohydrates and proteins as the most suitable and safe diet for term parturients without associated pathologies, and identify numerous benefits for the parturient, for labor and delivery, and for the fetus and newborn.
