Introduction: The work of police officers is characterized by high demands and potentially chronic stressors, and exposure to continuous occupational stressors leads to high levels of burnout and mental health problems in this population
Objective: To map the available scientific evidence on the determinants of burnout syndrome in police officers.
Methods: Scoping Review, considering the defined criteria and the suitability of the databases/repositories - B-on, PubMed and CINHALcomplete. The process of analyzing the relevance, extraction and synthesis of data was carried out by four independent reviewers, with a time limit of research between 2020 and 2023. Only articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish were considered, giving rise to a review corpus of 11 articles.
Results: Predictors and exacerbating factors of burnout were prolonged exposure to work-related stressors; poor labor protection policies on the part of institutions; time spent at work each day; workload/volume of their shifts, excessive psychological demands; lack of social support; seniority in the profession, being older, male, single or divorced, lack of support from social and family networks. Having a greater perception of predictability, meaning of work, distributive justice, procedural justice, international justice and organizational identification significantly predicted their work.
Conclusion: Rehabilitation nurses have an active and essential role to play in preventing problems resulting from burnout, by implementing programs such as gymnastics programs.
