Health-related quality of life of institutionalized elderly: a descriptive-correlational study

Introduction: Demographic ageing is an inevitable reality, the result of greater longevity, which is associated with dependency rates that prioritize care for the elderly in order to ensure their Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). The informal network is insufficient, leading to the need for institutionalization.
Objective: To assess the perception of the HRQoL of the elderly institutionalized in a Residential Structure for the Elderly (RSE), Day Centre (DC), and Home Support Service (HSS) in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (FCR).
Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted by administering questionnaires to elderly people living in residential care homes, day centres, and home care services across the eleven care facilities for the elderly in the municipality of FCR.
Results: Of the 191 elderly people, aged between 65 and 99, who were predominantly female, widowed, from rural areas, with four years of schooling and a working life in the primary sector, the majority reside in residential care homes, with the decision to enter the care system being driven by health issues. In terms of perception of QoL, an average score of 525.97 was obtained (indicating a perception of good QoL). Focusing on the institutional context, this is predominantly perceived as good when older adults are in residential care (48.2%).
Conclusion: Knowledge of the perception of HRQoL is an auxiliary management tool that enhances the adequacy and quality of responses to emerging needs.
