Introduction: The digital transformation in tourism is revolutionising visitor experiences, especially in cultural heritage. Technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence offer more immersive and accessible interactions.
Objective: This study analyses the impact of the digitisation of cultural heritage on attracting and engaging tourists in the Douro, proposing strategies for more innovative and sustainable tourism.
Methods: An exploratory and qualitative approach was adopted, based on a critical review of the literature and analysis of case studies of smart tourist destinations.
Results: Digitalisation can improve the visitor experience, extend their stay and diversify the tourist offer, but it faces challenges such as the need to invest in digital infrastructure and training for professionals.
Conclusion: Digital transformation can consolidate the Douro as a smart tourist destination, provided it is accompanied by strategic planning and collaboration between stakeholders. It is recommended that pilot projects be developed to validate the proposed solutions in practice.
