Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted virus associated with physical, psychological, and social repercussions that extend beyond the infected individual, affecting marital and family dynamics. Stigma, a lack of knowledge, and emotional challenges can have a negative impact on marital satisfaction.
Objective: To review scientific literature on the impact of an HPV diagnosis on marital satisfaction, considering the role of marital and family support and psychosocial challenges.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies were included, with no restrictions on time period or language, and were identified through searches of CINAHL, MEDLINE, RCAAP, and Google Scholar. The selection and analysis were carried out by independent reviewers.
Results: Eighteen studies were included, predominantly qualitative. The main impacts identified were feelings of guilt, shame, and mistrust, reduced sexual intimacy, communication difficulties, and suspicions of infidelity. On the other hand, mutual support and open communication were associated with greater resilience and a lower negative impact. The dimensions of the Dynamic Model of Family Assessment and Intervention - couple dynamic, communication, sexual interaction, and sexual function — proved to be key determinants for the analysis.
Conclusion: The impact of HPV on marital satisfaction is multifactorial, encompassing emotional, relational, and sexual aspects. Intervention strategies in family health nursing should include a focus on health literacy, the promotion of communication, and marital support to minimise the negative impact.
