Every researcher in theater history is eventually confronted with the fundamental and complex problem of the instability of traces left by an ephemeral art in which memory is "partial, truncated, fragmented", and imaginary (Georges Banu). How can one gather the scattered threads of this memory and interpret its meaning? The example of Scapin, less known and less emblematic than Harlequin, serves as a basis to address this question. In this study, we will attempt to reconstruct the memory of Scapin through the textual and iconographic traces that have come down to us.
