Abstract

This essay proposes a reflection on the construction of female subaltern characters in Hélia Correia’s plays, particularly Perdição. Exercício sobre Antígona (1991) and Desmesura. Exercício com Medeia (2006). Taking as a starting point the intertextual dialogue with Sophocles’ and Euripides’ tragedies, the present analysis focuses on how a contemporary feminist approach, through diverse representation strategies concerning the slaves on stage, destabilizes and reinvents the mythical narratives inherited from Classical Antiquity, opening up a new space to inquire the definitions of “otherness” and “power”.
