Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious public health problem, which has resulted in considerable socio-economic costs. Adequate health literacy levels and empowerment are aspects required to diabetic people, which are capable of extensive development.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the capacity of self-control, the knowledge and the Quality of Life (QoL), of people with type 2 diabetes, aged 65 or older in a unit of primary health care.

Methods: An exploratory and descriptive-correlational study was applied to 137 sample subjects, that responded a sociodemographic and clinical characterization questionnaire and the validated versions for the portuguese population of the DES-SF, DKT and EQ-5D.

Results: The sample shows a poor knowledge about the disease, a high perception of capacity for self-management of DM and QoL; with mean ± SD scores of 54,34 ± 17,72 of DKT, 3.52 ± 0.69 of DES-SF, 0.63 ± 0.30 of EQ-5D. We detected a positive and significant correlation between the ability to control the DM, the knowledge and the QoL. In addition, we also find some statistically significant differences in DES-SF, DKT and EQ-5D before educational attainment and DM complications.

Conclusions: The results reveals the need for effective health education programs, as well as relevant aspects to take into account in its elaboration.
