Digitalization process expansion during the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

We present and analyse the statistical data about the expansion of the digitalization process within daily life in a global and Portuguese perspective between the months of March and May 2020 in relation to the previous trimester (December 2019 and January and February 2020). This selection of time corresponds to the lockdown imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic (by the SARS-COV-2) in which more than 4.5 billion people were forced to stay home, as a restriction to avoid the increase of contamination by the new coronavirus. As an alternative to keep social relationships, digital media use has increased remarkably in the daily life of individuals and in social institutions. Our main goal is to register and to analyse quantitative data on digital penetration in daily life. To collect data for this period, we took as a main reference the platform SimilarWeb. To analyse the data, we use, as a main support, Mediatization Studies, which focus on understanding the cultural and social changes promoted by and inside the media context. In terms of results, it is possible to highlight the increase of digital use around the globe and in Portugal, especially, digital media network websites.

Doutor em Ciências da Comunicação na Faculdade de Ciências Humanas - Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Graduado em Comunicação Social habilitação em Jornalismo pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte UFRN, com graduação sanduíche na Universidade Católica Portuguesa em Lisboa. Mestre pelo Programa de Pós-graduação de Estudos da Mídia da UFRN. Integrante do Grupo de Estudos BOAVENTURA - CCHLA/ UFRN, em convênio com a Universidade de Coimbra-Portugal. Membro da Rede de Pesquisadores em Folkcomunicação - Rede FOLKCOM. É coordenador adjunto do Grupo de Trabalho de Jovens Investigadores da SOPCOM – Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação. Atualmente, realiza um pós-doutoramento em Ciências da Comunicação, no Instituto de Comunicação, da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. E é ainda bolseiro (BGCT/ FCT) do Gabinete de Comunicação do Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (IGOT) e do Centro de Estudos Geográficos (CEG), da Universidade de Lisboa. Digital Preservation Policy

Finisterra uses the Open Journal Systems (OJS 3.2.1.4), a free and open-source software for journal management and publication, developed and distributed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) under the GNU General Public License. PKP is a multi-university initiative that develops open-source software and conducts research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing. OJS includes the PKP PN plugin, a means of digitally preserving journal content in the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), which ensures long-term access to OJS journal content. PKP enables OJS journal publishers to preserve content in a decentralised and distributed manner. This ensures that, in the event a journal ceases publication or goes offline, continued access to articles and issues remains available (long-term preservation).
