Digital Methods in Geography: the internet as a field of investigation

Fieldwork is essential for Geography. However, in the globalized world, our field of investigation is partially or totally online. Digital platforms, social networks, IM apps (instant messaging applications) or websites offer us big and small data that can be of great use to geographers.

In this training action, we will address digital methods in geography and the different ways in which we can search and analyze information available online. The training event will be developed in three topics:

  1. Digital methods or the digitization of the geographical research (Daniel Paiva, IGOT-ULisboa)
  2. Online databases: from conventional statistics to big data (Inês Boavida Portugal, IGOT-ULisboa)
  3. Qualitative research on digital platforms in a pandemic context (Daniela Ferreira, IGOT-ULisboa)
