Mourning context of relatives of people with palliative needs

Introduction: The mourning context and everything that can potentiate or extend it are complex situations that cover multiple dimensions which can turn in pathological mourning. Frequently the way that relatives deal with it is neglected when it should be accompanied and prevented or even diagnosed for a better attendance to the relatives of people with palliative needs.
Objectives: To ascertain whether there is relationship between the sociodemographic variables, psychological variables, mourning context and the way that relatives of people with palliative needs deal with mourning.
Methods: Quantitative, transversal, descriptive and correlational study, conducted on 132 relatives of people with palliative needs, selected by a non-probabilistic, snow ball method. The instrument for collecting data includes a sociodemographic questionnaire, then the Herth Hope Index, a Mourning Context scale, a social support scale, a Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and the Inventory of Complicated Grief.
Results: Of the 132 participants, 94 reveal a normal process of mourning. 67 % were women, with a mean age of 44 years, with a partner in life (61.7 %), living in the city (75.5 %). The level of hope and the age revealed a predictive effect on the prevalence of the normal mourning.
Conclusions: The results of the identification of some factors involved in the mourning process reveal the need to mobilize promoter resources of a healthy living of mourning in palliative context.
