Introduction: Spontaneous abortion, even at an early stage of pregnancy, can cause sadness and pain, both physical and emotional, for a woman. It is important that these feelings are identified and taken into account, so that the woman experiences this in a non-pathological way. Likewise, it is important to recognise risk factors for these situations, as well as ways to protect the woman.
Objetive: Mapping knowledge about the impact of miscarriage on women's mental health.
Methods: A scoping review was carried out using databases hosted on the EBSCO platform, based on the methodological principles and guidelines of the Joanna Brigs Institute. The aim was to answer the question "What influence does miscarriage have on women's mental health?".
Results: Based on the inclusion criteria defined, nine studies were analysed. The results were grouped into three categories: emotional factors, protective factors and risk factors. Miscarriage can trigger various emotions and feelings that can culminate in mental health problems such as anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stresse disorder. Some aspects can be identified as protective or risk factors for developing anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stresse disorder after a miscarriage.
Conclusion: Miscarriage can have a significant impact on a woman's mental health. It is important that the emotions experienced during this phase are recognised and validated, and that the woman receives emotional support during this difficult time.
