Introduction: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Portugal and worldwide, and the population is known to have a reduced level of knowledge about this condition.
Objective: To analyse the change in mean stroke knowledge among 11th-grade students at a secondary school in northern Portugal following the SomosUm® course.
Methods: A cross-sectional quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention study was conducted. The target population included 132 11th-grade students enrolled in the 2023/24 academic year, from which a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 83 participants was obtained. Data collection was carried out on the 10th and 17th of April 2024 using a questionnaire. The study received approval from the ethics committee.
Results: Participants were aged between 15 and 20 years; 50.6% were female, and 55.4% were enrolled in vocational courses. An increase in the mean level of stroke knowledge was observed after the intervention. No statistically significant relationships were found between sociodemographic characteristics and mean stroke knowledge.
Conclusion: The mean level of stroke knowledge among 11th-grade students increased following the intervention, with no association observed with sociodemographic variables. These findings suggest that the SomosUm® course had a positive impact, supporting its continued implementation in this and other populations.
