Introduction: Airway obstruction is one of the main causes of death. Secretion aspiration is used to remove secretions from the airway using negative pressure. It is indicated to ensure airway patency is maintained.
Objective: To identify and map scientific evidence on aspiration of secretions from victims of airway obstruction, enabling a descriptive synthesis of the state of the art of this procedure.
Methods: A Scoping Review was carried out in accordance with the JBI methodology for Scoping Reviews. A search strategy was developed in six scientific databases to find published and unpublished studies in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, with no time restrictions. Two independent reviewers assessed the full texts of the selected citations for eligibility. Data extraction was carried out by two independent reviewers using a previously developed tool. The results were extracted directly into tables that are accompanied by a narrative summary that highlights the objectives of the review.
Results: This scoping review included three literature reviews, one prospective observational study, and one retrospective clinical study. The studies included took place in four different clinical contexts.
Conclusion: There is a lack of consensus on the techniques to be implemented when aspirating secretions, such as pressure, caliber, duration, clinical indications, and nursing interventions.
