Nurses systematised approach in the emergency room for people with traumatic brain injury: a systematic literature review
DOI:

Introduction: The acute phase of Traumatic Brain Injury [TBI] includes interventions to resolve potentially life-threatening threats and to mitigate the progression of secondary brain damage, so the coordination of all action must be centred on the time factor.
Objetive: To identify the relevance of the nurse's systematised approach in the emergency room for the prevention of secondary brain injury.
Methods: The Systematic Literature Review followed the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Quantitative and qualitative studies were included that covered diagnoses and interventions during the acute phase of TBI. The search was carried out in the EBSCO and B-On databases (2018 - 2023).
Results: Twelve articles were included. All of them allowed us to affirm that standardising nursing care for people with TBI has significant outputs in terms of resolving complications during the acute phase. Recognising pathophysiological or neurological signs and symptoms allows for greater accuracy in the care provided.
Conclusion: Haemodynamic monitoring and neurological surveillance by nurses are crucial. Systematisation of practice helps the early identification and treatment of secondary brain injury. More studies need to be developed to emphasise nursing care, which has so far been approached globally.
