Introduction: Heart failure is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide and has a high mortality and morbidity rate. Heart transplantation is one of the most common treatment options, but not everyone is a candidate for transplantation. It is in this context that Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) have emerged as an alternative and life-saving measure, but there is little data on the effects of device implantation on the person's quality of life.
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of LVADs in improving the quality of life of people with terminal heart failure.
Methods: A systematic review of effectiveness was performed using the method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Two independent reviewers selected the studies, extracted and synthesised the data.
Results: Seven studies were included, of which two studies showed unequivocal benefits in the quality of life of people with terminal heart failure living with LVADs; three studies showed a worse quality of life; and finally, the remaining two studies did not show significant results in improving quality of life.
Conclusion: There is no robust evidence to prove that LVAD improves quality of life. More studies should be carried out in this area, and a psychological follow-up programme for people living with LVAD should be implemented and made available.
