The subject of the identity of Cape Verdean theatre has aroused the interest of critics and researchers in recent years, especially with the emergence of contemporary movements such as popular Creole comedy and scenic Creolization. However, many studies tend to focus on the work of a specific troupe, neglecting the diversity of artistic interventions taking place in the archipelago.
In this article, we propose to revisit, based on the state of the art surrounding this discussion, the contours of the identity of the performing arts in a nation that arises from the encounter between different cultures. Based on case studies of different theatre groups in Cape Verde that have prioritized different scenic languages, we will question the main aesthetics followed in order to determine how they influence the identity of theatre in the country.
We seek to understand how the historical and cultural context influences the evolution of theatre in the country and how the performing arts are used to rethink the nature of being Creole.
