FINISTERRA AWARD - ARTICLE OF THE YEAR 2025

Regulations

1) Award

  1. The FINISTERRA AWARD - ARTICLE OF THE YEAR aims to promote scientific activity in the field of Geography and related sciences.
  2. The award is intended for the authors of articles published in Finisterra during the previous calendar year. Reviews, commentaries, and news items shall not be considered for the award.
  3. The award shall be defined annually and shall include the issuance of a certificate of merit.
  4. The award shall be announced and presented in a public ceremony during the Annual Finisterra Lecture, in the year following the publication of the winning article.

2) Jury

  1. The Jury shall consist of a Chair and 5 members, appointed annually by the Editorial Board and the Executive Editors Committee of Finisterra.
  2. The Jury shall act independently and autonomously in all matters, from its internal organisation to the absolute and relative merit of the article.
  3. The Jury may decide not to award the prize and/or to grant honourable mentions.
  4. Decisions of the Jury shall not be subject to complaint or appeal.

3) Evaluation criteria

  1. The following criteria shall be considered in the selection of the best published article:
  • Scientific quality;
  • Innovative character;
  • Originality of the research undertaken;
  • Methodological quality;
  • Relevance of the results for the advancement of geographical knowledge or related scientific fields.

4) Exclusion criteria for articles under evaluation

  1. The following shall constitute grounds for exclusion of articles from evaluation:
  2. i) Articles authored/co-authored by members of the Editorial Board and the Executive Editors Committee;
  3. ii) Articles authored/co-authored by award recipients from the previous 3 years.

5) Final provisions

  1. These regulations may be amended, in whole or in part, by decision of the Editorial Board and the Executive Editors Committee.
  2. Any matters or cases omitted from these regulations may be decided upon by the Editorial Board and the Executive Editors Committee, following consultation with the jury appointed for the respective year.
