The Historical Villages of Portugal network (nHVP) integrates 12 historical villages of the Central Region of Portugal with a set of distinctive characteristics: history, culture and heritage. These villages, located in ‘low density territories’, registered the effects of human desertification, enhanced by its interiority and desertification. This article presents the work developed within the scope of the PLowDeR project. This project aims to identify a set of indicators that enable the evaluation of the economic and social impact of the touristic activity of the rAHP, in order to facilitate the planning and the formulation of strategies that promote its sustainability. Seven ‘characterization dimensions’ of analysis were identified. These support a set of indicators, organized in nine ‘dimensions of aggregation’. This framework was validated by the stakeholders of the nHVP, using a focus group design, aiming at replicating it to other low density territories. After this validation, data collection and analysis instruments were devised. In this article the framework will be presented, as well as the methodological process followed to reach it.
