Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has been changing at a dazzling pace. It is necessary to act rapidly and find new ways to adjust to this new reality and at the same time think about more sustainable strategies, both social and environmental. The purpose of this article is to examine the phenomenon of tourism in Portuguese cities, considering not only a broader context of our current economic condition but also a review of the existing literature on the issue of “urban tourism”. Then, we will be able to envision principles and rules to boost this sector, at a local level, considering the new challenges presented by the pandemic as well as renewing the attractiveness of tourist destinations.
