Abstract

This article aims to highlight the impacts that the floods of November 1967, in the Lisbon region, had on public health and the analysis of the role played by the self-organized action of health students, particularly medicine. The method was based on a systematic review of the literature carried out in public and private archives and in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Disasters databases. Several video and audio documents were analysed with interviews that reported the health students’ interventions after the 1967 floods in Lisbon. As a result, it is evident that the student volunteering was organized in order to respond to the impacts of floods, with special emphasis on public health, highlighting in this field the students involved in the vaccination campaigns and urgent health monitoring of the affected populations. Hence, the students’ actions in helping the victims of the 1967 floods provided knowledge of the environmental problems of public health and deficiencies in health care for a large part of the Portuguese population at that time.

The Colonial-Liberation Wars in Postcolonial Times» (2017-2022, financiado pelo Conselho Europeu para a Investigação.É autor e co-autor de vários trabalhos sobre ideologias políticas nos anos 1960 e 1970; oposições à ditadura do Estado Novo; colonialismo, anticolonialismo e pós-colonialismo; e dinâmicas entre história, memória e poder.

António Avelino Batista Vieira. Concluiu Geografia pela Universidade de Coimbra em 2009. É Professor Auxiliar na Universidade do Minho. Publicou 37 artigos em revistas especializadas e 35 trabalhos em actas de eventos, possui 25 capítulos de livros e 25 livros publicados. Possui 39 itens de produção técnica. Participou em 1 evento no estrangeiro e 10 em Portugal. Orientou 1 dissertação de mestrado e co-orientou 2 na área de Ciências da Terra e do Ambiente. Entre 2007 e 2010 participou em 1 projecto de investigação. Actua nas áreas de Ciências Naturais com ênfase em Ciências da Terra e do Ambiente e Ciências Sociais com ênfase em Geografia Económica e Social. Nas suas actividades profissionais interagiu com 82 colaboradores em co-autorias de trabalhos científicos. No seu curriculum DeGóis os termos mais frequentes na contextualização da produção científica, tecnológica e artístico-cultural são: Incêndios florestais, Patrimonio Geomorfológico, Serra de Montemuro, Fire, Portugal, degradação e recuperação do solo, IDE, SIG, erosão pós-incêndio e Mudanças climáticas.
