Abstract

Demographic aging constitutes a
not only European reality but, with special evidence,
Portuguese. In 2020, according to data from the
Eurostat, the Union Aging Index
European Union was 137.2%, while in Portugal
this value was 165.1%, only surpassed by
Italy which was 180.9%. Today the population with
over 65 years old represents about a fifth of
European population (20.7%) and a little more in
Portugal (22.3%).
