O futuro das cidades passa pela sua capacidade de se tornarem mais sustentáveis, o que exige um planeamento cuidado e medidas específicas que garantam a preservação do ambiente, estimulem um crescimento económico sustentável e promovam o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade mais justa e equitativa.
Adinyira et al. (2007) consideram a sustentabilidade urbana como um conjunto de condições urbanas desejáveis que persistem ao longo do tempo e que se caracterizam por questões como a equidade inter e intrageracional, a proteção ambiental, a utilização mínima de recursos não renováveis, a vitalidade e diversidade económicas, a autossuficiência da comunidade e o bem-estar humano.
