Guidelines thematic issue

Finisterra accepts, at any time, proposals for thematic publications (TP), formalised by completing the appropriate form and sending it to the journal’s email address. The collaboration for publication may take the following forms:

        1. Thematic issues
        2. Thematic sections
        3. Publication of thematic manuscripts

A TP proposal is submitted by one or more proponents who will be considered Guest Editors, with one member designated as the corresponding editor, acting as the liaison between the Director, the Executive Editors Committee, the group of Guest Editors (GE) and, if necessary, the authors and reviewers.

The Director and the Executive Editors Committee evaluate proposals based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the topic;

  • Scientific quality of each proposed manuscript;

  • Coherence of the manuscript proposals as a whole and the topic’s contribution to scientific advancement;

  • Research background of the authors in the theme area (academic degree and affiliation);

  • Ensuring diversity in TPs regarding participation of specialists from different fields and/or backgrounds – authors affiliated with the same institution may not exceed 1/3 of the total number of TP authors. Non-compliance with this requirement is grounds for exclusion.

The decision to accept a TP proposal lies with the Director and the Executive Editors Committee of Finisterra, with a maximum period of 1 month between submission and decision.
The GE of an approved thematic issue signs a formal agreement for the scheduled publication.

Proposal for a Special Issue
Proponents submit a proposal for a Special Issue (SI) to the Director of Finisterra. The guidelines and form are available on the journal’s website. The form includes the identification of the main theme of the SI and information on each proposed manuscript (title, abstract, authorship, and two possible reviewers).

To publish a Special Issue, a minimum of 7 manuscripts must be accepted for publication after peer review (plus an optional editorial). It is therefore recommended that the proposal include 9 to 11 manuscripts to minimise potential withdrawals or rejections during the process.

The estimated time between submission and the Director’s response is one month.

After acceptance, authors must submit their manuscripts through the journal’s platform following all editorial guidelines. All manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review. The Special Issue will only be published once at least 7 manuscripts are ready for publication.

The estimated time between final submission and publication is approximately 9 months.

Proposal for a Thematic Section
Proponents submit a proposal for a Thematic Section (TS) to the Director of Finisterra. The guidelines and form are available on the journal’s website. The form includes the identification of the main theme of the TS and information on each proposed manuscript (title, abstract, authorship, and two possible reviewers).

To publish a TS, a minimum of 3 manuscripts must be accepted for publication after peer review (plus an optional editorial). It is therefore recommended that the proposal include 5 to 6 manuscripts.

The estimated time between submission and the Director’s response is one month.

After acceptance, authors must submit their manuscripts through the journal’s platform following all editorial guidelines. All manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review. The TS will only be published once at least 3 manuscripts are ready for publication.

The estimated time between final submission and publication is approximately 6 months.

Publication of Individual Articles
Proponents may promote Finisterra as a journal open to submissions related, for example, to a scientific event. A reference to the event will be included in the acknowledgements or as a final note.

This format does not require a formal proposal. The intention to establish a partnership should be communicated to the Director via the journal’s email.

The estimated time from submission to publication is approximately 6 months.

General Guidelines

  • All manuscripts must align with the journal’s scope, focusing on geographical approaches to various themes and phenomena.

  • Manuscript proposals should reflect diversity in gender, nationality, and affiliation.

  • Manuscripts must be submitted via the journal’s platform in compliance with Finisterra’s editorial guidelines (e.g. formatting, length). Failure to comply will result in immediate rejection.

  • All manuscripts will undergo standard peer review. The Director and Executive Editors Committee will invite proposed reviewers or others they deem appropriate. Manuscripts may be rejected at any stage.

  • Manuscripts must be original and not previously published, including in conference proceedings. All submissions are checked for similarity with previous publications. The submitted manuscript may be an expanded or revised version of a paper previously published in a conference proceeding.
