Introduction: Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes face highly complex challenges associated with managing this chronic disease. Research has highlighted the advantages of interventions that promote disease self-management skills.
Objective: To map interventions that promote self-management for adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Methods: The Scoping review follows the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Eligibility criteria are defined according to: Population - adolescents from 10 to 19 years old; Concept - diabetes self-management; Context - considering all intervention contexts. Studies published between 2009 and 2021 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish included: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Joanna Briggs Institute Databases, and Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal. The protocol of this review is registered in the Open Science Framework https://osf.io/z6wbj.
Results: Nine articles were included. The implemented interventions involved mostly educational programs in group sessions. The interventions showed as result indicators: self-management skills (problem-solving skills, decision making, finding and utilizing resources, partnership with health care providers, taking action), knowledge, glycated hemoglobin, quality of life, self-efficacy, and self-care.
Conclusion: From the interventions analyzed, six indicators were extracted whose results were significant: level of glycated hemoglobin, self-management, knowledge, self-efficacy, and quality of life.
