Introduction: Adverse events constitute failures in safety and are one of the main causes of death and disability. They have clinical, economic, social and organizational impact. Intensive Care Units are environments prone to the occurrence of adverse events. Reporting promotes learning from errors, the implementation of corrective measures and contributes to improving the quality and safety.
Objective: To map the evidence on strategies that promote the reporting of adverse events in nursing care for critically ill patients, in the Intensive Care Units context.
Methods: Scoping review study was carried out according to the Joana Briggs Institute protocol. The search was carried out in CINAHL (Via EBSCO), MEDLINE (via PUBMED), SciELO, COCHRANE, LILACS, RCAAP, DANS EASY/ OpenGrey and DART-Europe. No time limits or language restrictions were applied.
Results: 9 studies were included, identifying strategies such as: education and training on safety/notification; notification as an opportunity for improvement; confidentiality; anonymity; non-punitive culture; simple notification systems, international standardized language; encouragement and support from leaders, open communication; feedback; implementation of corrective measures and safety culture
Conclusion: Reporting is essential for learning from errors and for implementing corrective improvement measures that prevent the occurrence of adverse events. Identifying strategies that promote reporting in nursing care for critically ill patients can increase reporting and improve safety and quality of care.
