Introduction: Pregnancy is a period of physical, psychological, and social readjustment, often leading to personal and family crisis situations. Counseling is a psychotherapeutic intervention that empowers and enables women to deal with the changes of pregnancy. The counseling program aims to promote women's mental health in the perinatal period by increasing self-awareness and strategies for coping.
Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of a perinatal mental health nursing counseling program.
Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, quasi-experimental study through a pilot study. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of 10 pregnant women. The program consisted of 3 sessions throughout the gestational weeks and used the principles of the Nursing Process and the psychoeducational and group counseling process. The instruments used were a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the empowerment in pregnancy scale, and the Dass-21 scale (anxiety, stress, and depression). The T-test for paired samples was used.
Results: After the intervention, there was an increase in empowerment (Me=86.6) in almost all the dimensions of the scale and a decrease in the Stress dimension. The T-test shows that the program caused changes in empowerment and in the DASS-21 (Stress dimension). The correlation between the two variables shows that the more empowered women are, the less anxiety, depression, and stress they feel.
Conclusion: The study shows the effectiveness of nursing counseling programs in facilitating the process of transition to motherhood.
