Introduction: Clinical supervision in nursing is a skill developed by peers, with knowledge sharing, interaction, guidance and accompaniment, with a view to improving the processes of clinical practice in this profession. It promotes the supervisee's sense of autonomy and responsibility.
Objective: To identify the perceptions of a group of nurses about the profile of the nurse supervisor.
Methods: The approach used was participatory action research using World Café tools and mini-narratives. Data were submitted to an inductive thematic content analysis, informed by Grounded Theory principles.
Results: Clinical supervision in nursing is a complex process that requires cognitive, behavioural, and emotional skills. Participants emphasised the importance of specific training in supervision, both pedagogical and professional. Barriers such as lack of organisational support and personal difficulties were identified, but also facilitating elements such as organisational support and individual motivation.
Conclusion: The findings revealed that nurses' perceptions of the supervisor's profile encompass cognitive, behavioural and emotional dimensions, associated with training, mentoring and interpersonal relationship processes. The study, although exploratory, provides a relevant understanding of clinical supervision in nursing, in line with the existing literature. It emphasises the need for greater investment in the training of supervisors, as well as the development of diverse skills. Measures such as workshops, role-playing, brainstorming, reflections on experiences and the creation of a guideline manual with measurable indicators for assessing supervisees' competences are suggested, promoting continuous improvement in the quality of care.
