Introduction: The importance of the nursing practice environment has been confirmed by a growing body of scientific evidence, mostly from studies of nursing teams providing care in hospital settings. In view of the specific and preponderant role played by nurse managers in health care organizations, it is equally important to assess their nursing practice environment and determine its impact.
Objective: To adapt the Nurse Manager Practice Environment (NMPE) scale to the Portuguese context.
Methods: Methodological study, which followed the method used by the RN4CAST - Nurse Forecasting in Europe Consortium (Squires et al., 2013). The stages of translation, synthesis, back-translation, semantic evaluation, content validity, and pre-testing were completed.
Results: A content validity index of 0.80 was obtained for the entire scale (S-CVI) and 0.78 for each item (I-CVI). All the experts agreed that the equivalence of the translation was maintained. The results of the pre-test showed no need for changes, and the cognitive interview revealed good levels of comprehension.
Conclusion: The Portuguese version of the NMPE scale showed content, semantic, technical, and conceptual equivalence.
