Introduction: Glamping is a blend of the words “glamorous” and “camping”. Given its connection to rural areas, it can be considered a rural development strategy while also meeting the needs of tourists seeking closer contact with nature. Despite this relevance, a bibliometric study to clarify key issues surrounding the topic has not yet been conducted.
Objective: Provide insights into the scope and progress of research, key authors and affiliations, sources used for publication, countries analysed, research topics, and methodologies used.
Methods: Bibliometric research conducted using the Scopus database. The word “glamping” was used, focusing on works that included the term in the title, abstract, or keywords. The search was then limited to works published in journals or conferences. Since six works were not directly related to tourism, they were eliminated. The analysis of the results was based on descriptive statistics and supplemented with VosViewer.
Results: Most of the papers appeared after 2020, which reveals the novelty of research on the topic. Of a list of 114 authors, only three had three articles, and eight had two articles, which is understandable given the novelty of this form of tourism. Portugal and China are the main countries surveyed. The Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, Sustainability, International Journal of Tourism Research, and the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management are the main journals for publication.
Conclusion: Glamping emerges as a recent research field, with most studies conducted in Portugal and China. The literature focuses primarily on the supply side, while demand-side research emphasizes tourists’ psychological characteristics. Important gaps remain, particularly regarding entrepreneurs’ profiles and the territorial embeddedness of this form of tourism, pointing to directions for future research.
