Introduction: This article contributes to academic research on educommunication, specifically in the dimension of media education and journalism, by questioning the roles both play in combating disinformation.
Objective: To analyze the role of journalism and media education in promoting critical thinking and countering disinformation within the Portuguese context.
Methods: A qualitative approach, supported by a theoretical framework and based on eight semi-structured interviews conducted with professionals from Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), including five journalists, two video reporters, and the RTP audience ombudsperson.
Results: The research shows that when journalism abandons scrutiny and adopts short-sighted, sensationalist strategies in addressing complex issues, it weakens democracy and erodes citizens’ trust in the profession, thereby fueling misinformation. The interviewees emphasize the importance of critical thinking in a social and technological landscape marked by manipulation through digital media.
Conclusion: The study highlights the central role journalism must play in media education, reinforcing its responsibility to promote critical thinking and support citizens in navigating an increasingly complex information environment.
