The eco-schools programme in training future generations for sustainable tourism

Abstract

Introduction: The transition to sustainable tourism requires innovative practices that promote energy efficiency and environmental awareness. The Eco-Schools Program, aligned with the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, is key to training citizens and professionals committed to sustainability.

Objective: Identify how the Eco-Schools Program in Higher Education can promote sustainable energy practices and transform consumption habits, seeking to encourage the use of renewable energy and the implementation of policies that promote more environmentally friendly institutions.

Methods: A qualitative approach was adopted, based on a case study methodology, and a descriptive analysis was made of the data from the Environmental Audit questionnaire relating to the Complementary Theme of Energy, applied to 175 participants.

Results: The results indicate an intermediate-high performance in the Complementary Theme of Energy, with an average of 9.47 points out of 15, revealing moderate variability among respondents, highlighting a strong habit of saving energy, although gaps persist in the knowledge and practice of some sustainable behaviors.

Conclusion: It has been found that the Eco-Schools Program is a transformative tool, capable of educating conscious citizens and promoting sustainable energy practices, and that its initiatives strengthen the reduction of unnecessary consumption and contribute to the development of sustainable tourist destinations.
