Family satisfaction with palliative care

Introduction: The satisfaction of families with the care provided to patients in Palliative Care (PC) is considered an important indicator of their quality, with the nurse assuming a prominent position.
Objetives: To evaluate the degree of satisfaction of family members of patients hospitalized in PC regarding the care provided and to analyze their relationship with sociodemographic variables.
Methods: Quantitative descriptive-correlational study in a non-probabilistic sample for convenience of 96 relatives of patients hospitalized in the Center of Portugal, using a questionnaire of sociodemographic data and the FAMCARE Scale, translated and validated in Portugal by Almeida (2012).
Results: The family members are 67.7% women, assuming themselves as primary caregivers (73.8%), aged ≤ 64 years (84.6%). The degree of kinship is Child (41.7%), live with a partner (64.6%) and with their children (56.3%). They have basic education, with no previous experience in PC (90.6%), live in an urban environment (54.2%), exercise a profession (61.5%) and have no experience in the health area (87.5%).
Family members are satisfied with the care (X = 40.50 ± 13.72). They are more satisfied with the information given and physical care and less satisfied with psychosocial care.
Conclusions: There is still a long way to go in order to improve satisfaction with care, particularly about psychosocial care, in order to promote its continuous improvement.
