This article proposes an interpretation of a document from the end of the 18th century, presented to the Ministério do Reino (Ministry of the Kingdom of Portugal), with a request for a license to build/create a theater for "inanimate interlocutors". Grounded on the analysis of the document, we will contextualise the information gathered in the theatrical activity of the time, suggesting hypothesis for what the applicant proposes to present to the public, particularly with regard to technical issues about the performance space and performers, and theatrical genres. Based on an unpublished document that has not yet been studied, the aim of this article is to contribute to the knowledge of puppet theatre and theatrical activity in general in 18th century Portugal, and to be a starting point for future research.
