Abstract

In health migrant people’s healthcare, there is a need to consider their ethnic and cultural characteristics and the language barrier. The omission of these aspects compromises the coherency in clinical practice within health care organizations. The Office of the High Commissioner for Migration [ACM] developed in Portugal (2009-2012) the project of Intercultural mediation in Public Services [MISP], placing intercultural mediators in health care contexts: neutral and particularly active in resolving tensions. After the initial project, in 2015 the Higher education Network in Intercultural Mediation created the themed health group. This group started a study on qualitative and ethnomethodological oriented paradigm, to identify the results of MISP in health, named MEIOS. Preliminary results obtained, according to the stage of the study developed, are presented. It is concluded the importance of mediators’ inclusion in contexts, the recognition of their status of neutrality and the promotion of cultural sensitivity.
