Based on a mixed methodology, we analyse the profiles of Angolan, Brazilian and Cape Verdean students in mobility in Portuguese higher education. We question their motivations and the relationship between the mobility project and social mobility, which this migration trajectory could represent. The results highlight the importance of scholarships, the Portuguese language, and the prestige of universities. These aspects are marked by social class issues, but also influenced by the Portuguese colonial past and the late development of higher education in the countries of origin. Data show that international mobility seems to contribute to a bottom-up social mobility project.
