Abstract

Health literacy is associated with health promotion and influences on health behaviors, outcomes and citizenship. In order to characterize the evidence obtained within the scope of literacy for the health of the participating children, a qualitative study was developed, with a deductive-inductive orientation. Twenty semi-structured interviews were developed, analysed using the content analysis technique. The health literacy of the participants is characterized by the ability to understand, manage and invest in the areas of food and weight control, resulting from the health information conveyed by health professionals, parents, teachers, which allows to promote health and prevent disease through the adoption of healthy lifestyles. We identified a lack of knowledge regarding information on the prevention of low weight. Health promotion is revealed as a strategy that contributes to training, ‘empowerment’, health literacy and health citizenship.
